What Is Liquidity Aggregation Across Crypto Venues?

The same asset trades at different prices across centralized exchanges, decentralized exchanges, and OTC desks. Aggregation exists to capture that price dislocation across venues.

In equities or foreign exchange, an institution can lean on consolidated tapes and a short list of deep venues. Digital assets work differently. Liquidity for the same asset is spread across centralized exchanges, decentralized onchain exchanges, and over the counter desks, each running its own book at its own prices. Because of that, the same coin trades a little differently on every venue at any given moment. Capturing that price dislocation across venues is the whole point of liquidity aggregation: it gathers every venue's order book into one consolidated view, so an institution can see the best price wherever it sits and execute against it, instead of accepting whatever a single exchange happens to show.

The cost of fragmentation.

Fragmentation is expensive in ways that are easy to miss. A trader watching a single exchange sees only a slice of the real market, so the price on screen is rarely the best price available. Splitting an order by hand across venues is slow, error prone, and leaks information. And because each venue holds only part of the total depth, any large order that stays on one book walks straight up that book, paying for liquidity that existed elsewhere all along. For market makers, hedge funds, and asset managers operating across global markets, that fragmentation tax compounds on every trade.

Building one book from many

Aggregation starts with data. A platform connects to every venue, normalizes each book into a common format, and merges them into a single consolidated order book, often called a consolidated best bid and offer, or CBBO. Crucially this is more than a price display. A well built consolidated book accounts for the real cost of reaching each venue, including fees and transfers, so the best price shown is the best price net of friction. The result is a tighter effective spread and more visible depth than any single venue can offer alone.

From one book to best execution

A consolidated book tells you where liquidity is. Smart order routing acts on it. Sitting on top of the aggregated book, the router breaks a parent order into pieces and sends each one to the venue offering the best combination of price, depth, and cost at that instant, adjusting continuously as the market moves. Aggregation and routing together are what turn a fragmented market into something an institution can trade like a single deep pool, the foundation of automated execution and best execution in crypto.
