What Is a Consolidated Crypto Order Book / Consolidated Best Bid and Offer (CBBO)?

A consolidated crypto order book combines the live order books from many trading venues into a single, unified view of available liquidity. The best buy and sell prices across all those venues form the Consolidated Best Bid and Offer (CBBO). It is the crypto equivalent of a consolidated quote — and because crypto has no official version, building one is foundational to smart routing, best execution, and accurate transaction cost analysis.

The problem: crypto has no consolidated tape

In US equities, a regulated system links exchanges and publishes a national best bid and offer (NBBO), so everyone sees the same consolidated quote. Crypto has no equivalent. Each exchange, market maker, and DeFi venue maintains its own order book, with its own prices, depth, and fees. At any instant, the best price for an asset might be on one venue, the deepest liquidity on another, and the cheapest net price (after fees) on a third.

Without consolidation, a trader sees only fragments. The consolidated order book stitches those fragments back together.

What the CBBO represents

The Consolidated Best Bid and Offer is the highest bid and the lowest ask available across all connected venues at a given moment:

  • Consolidated best bid — the highest price anyone is willing to pay across all venues.
  • Consolidated best offer (ask) — the lowest price anyone is willing to sell at across all venues.

The gap between them is the consolidated spread — typically tighter than any single venue's spread, because it captures the best of every book. Beyond the top of book, a full consolidated order book also merges depth at each price level, so a trader can see how much size is available at each price across the entire market.

Why fee adjustment matters

A naive consolidated book just compares headline prices. A useful one is fee-adjusted: it normalizes each venue's prices for maker/taker fees, so the comparison reflects the true net cost of trading there. A venue with a slightly worse headline price but lower fees may actually offer the best net execution. Fee-aware consolidation is what makes the CBBO a reliable basis for routing decisions.

A high-quality consolidated book requires low-latency connections to many venues, careful normalization of symbols and fees, handling of venues that update at different speeds, and robust treatment of stale or crossed quotes.
